Additional Information
Information provided by Special Collections: "Early Las Vegas History by Florence Lee Jones, April 1970: Because Las Vegas was in an artesian belt, many small ranches were developed in the area as the result of drilling and bringing in flowing wells which required no pumping. This was in the era from 1905, when the town was established, until after World War II. Then the water table dropped drastically because of increasing demands for water for the growing population. The picture shown here is of the drill rig which put down the hole for the first well in the Vegas Heights District, brought in about 1907, by the crew Booth and Madison, shown at right. However, the location of water was a big gamble, as the late Ed Von Tobel Sr., and his partner, Jake Beckley, of the Ed Von Tobel Lumber Company, found. They were developing a ranch (about 1907) in Paradise Valley (where Sierra Vista is now located) and set about trying to provide water to irrigate their ranch. They drilled five wells, all of them failures. Nearby, others were able to bring in flowing wells."
