Description
Hermina Washington discusses growing up in West Las Vegas, her elementary school education and her family. She has worked for the State of Nevada for over 30 years.
Abstract
Hermina Washington was born, raised and still resides, in West Las Vegas, better known as the Westside. Seeking to take advantage of emergent opportunities for African Americans, her parents migrated from Arkansas to Las Vegas, joining several extended family members already settled in the city. Growing up during the Civil Rights Movement, Hermina was surrounded by strong, inspiring role models, including her grandmother and educators. Attending several schools throughout her K-12 education, Hermina was exposed to diversity in many forms: race, ethnicity, religion and class. While a self-described loner, Hermina was active in various extra-curricular activities. In elementary school, she played the clarinet; in high school, she was a cheerleader. After graduating from Western High School, Hermina began college at UNLV, before transferring to ASU, where she earned her degree. Although she had early aspirations to be a cosmetologist, Hermina has enjoyed a successful career with the State
