though as it was at some remote period in-habited by a race without doubt far superior in point of civilation to its present nativeinhabitants. As in many places as are to be found ruins of stone buildings apparently fortifications and temples of worship: and also aqueducts for irrigating purposes. Who these people were or where they lived there is no record----I received a letter from Mother a short time since saying Leonard's health was improving. I was very glad to hear it indeed It seemssad that a man so young should be broken down in health, for without health there is but little enjoyment in life I have been very fortunate as to my health have hardly seen a sick day I came to California. I have lived a rough life a good deal of the time on thefrontier but am in hopes I may not always live on the outskirts of civilization but be fortunate enough to be able to live where I wouldwish to, before many more years roll by. We are now so far east we find it to our interest to buy in the eastern market. We are buying now in Pittsburgh Penn freight is very high Our freight from Pittsburgh costs $160.00 per ton..
