George W. Arnold letter to his uncle, 1870

Full Text

Geo W Arnold (?) 1870 Pioche City Lincoln Co Nevada Dear Uncle Gideon I have intended writing to thee for some time. When I last saw Leonard some seven months since he told me thee would be pleased to hear from me and interested in news from these settlements far away from civilization I might say. I came to this place about six months ago it was then an entirely new silver mining districtand where we now have a town of two hundred houses and a population of two thousand or twenty five hundred persons. there was then only two or three houses and a population of about two hundred. The mines near the surface showed remarkable richness in silver andas they became more developed and opened to a greater depth the ore increased in richness and quantity. Now we have the best mining district in the state of Nevada. We are so far from business centers it is very expensive getting mills here. the cost of an ordinarysilver mill capable of reducing twenty five tons of ore per day is about $60,000
