C. A. Earle Rinker letter to H. C. Tolford, April 16, 1957
[handwritten at top:] Mailed today by reg. mail.
April 16, 1957
Mr. H.C. Tolford,
14226 Runnymede St.,
Van Nuys, Calif.
Dear Mr. Tolford:
Your letter of April 7th received and I have prepared 56 of the post card size prints which I have ready to mail and these will be in the mail today. Have picked out the ones I thought you would be interested in.
I think you were fortunate in getting 80 pictures of Manhattan and think also the old lady should be recognized in your book.
More than two years ago I started an autobiography and had planned to use some of these Goldfleld pictures in it if possible. I have 15 grandchildren and started this writing more for them. Since that time I have been urged to go into this a little deeper and have been plugging along on it.
I would certainly like to know more about the pictures you have and also to receive the panorama picture you offered.
You know Scotty and Johnson bought the old T & T R.R. and took it up. One of the engines is in the museum yard at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. The cross ties from railroad are stacked in canyon back of Scotty's Castle for firewood for the fire places. Stopped there last fall and they claim to have enough wood to run them 100 years. I have a picture of Thorne, Nev. showing R.R. station. Could that have been Hawthorne? I do not remember where I took it. I had filed each bunch of negatives in envelope together and some of them moulded. The envelopes were very brittle with age and the writing on them was broken to bits in several cases. One thing that helps identify many of the pictures, I had sent many of them to my mother who put them in album as she received them and also noted identity of eaeh picture. You are getting a picture of the station (T. & T.) at Montana Station near the Bonnie Claire Mill. Was thru there last Fall and all marks of the station are gone and nothing left of Mill but foundation.
I have been unable to locate the books I wrote you about but am still digging. Will be glad to send them when found, for your perusal. They are not in very good condition but still readable.
Am not planning trip to Calif. in near future but if you should get to Indiana would be glad to meet you here.
Believe I am sending you a little more than the $6.00 but remembering your offer of the panorama.
With best regards , I am,
