Activity Description

Have students choose one set of five consecutive letters from the Rinker collection and take notes on what life was like in a mining town. Students should seek information about what was eaten during the boomtown years in mining towns, the costs of given items, and common sports and pastimes. Using page layout software, create a news journal (e.g., Time Magazine, Newsweek) with students acting as feature editors for sections including national and local news, sports, and food and beverage.
