The City Attorney was requested at this time to make a draft on the ordinance limiting Package Stores and Taverns, changing it to one Package Store and Tavern to every 750 people. LIQUOR APPLICATIONS Denied TAXI APPLICATIONS 1st Qtr. 1954 Commissioner Bunker moved the following liquor applications for 1st Qtr. 1954 he denied: EARL S LIQUOR STORE FREMONT HOUSE WESTSIDE SHOPPING CENTER YOUR FAMILY MARKET Earl Turman Esther Schwartz Baker & LaVoie Joseph M. Bev Motion seconded by Commissioner Jarrett and carried by the following vote: Commissioners Bunker, Jarrett, Whipple and His Honor voting aye; noes, Commissioner Sharp. Commissioner Sharp moved the following taxi applications be approved in the same status as in previous quarter: ARROWHEAD U DRIVE CORP 0. S. Ward 5 U-Drive Trucks BOULDER CAB COMPANY Lee Spiers 6 Taxis YELLOW CAB COMPANY Pat Carver 28 Taxis PAWNBROKERS APPLICATION Renewal Jerry FOx & A. Coblentz Stoney's Motion seconded by Commissioner Whipple and carried by the following vote: Commissioners Bunker, Jarrett, Sharp, Whipple and His Honor voting aye; noes, none. Commissioner Jarrett moved the application of Jerry Fox and A. Coblentz for renewal of pawnbrokers license, 1st Qtr. 1954 for Stoney s, 128 South 1st Street be approved. Motion seconded by Commissioner Whipple and carried by the following vote: Commissioners Bunker, Jarrett, Sharp, Whipple and His Honor voting aye; noes, none. ORDINANCE NO. 584 At this time Commissioners Sharp and Whipple members of the committee for Board of Zoning Adjustment recommendation on the proposed ordinance for Board of Zoning Adjustment, reported favorably. PROPOSED ORDINANCE Plumbing Code Amendment NAME CITY PARK Squires Park Thereafter an ordinance entitled: AN ORDINANCE CREATING A BOARD OF ADJUST­MENT TO ACT ON CERTAIN MATTERS DEALING WITH ZONING WITHIN THE CITY; PROVIDING FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS; DEFINING THEIR POWERS AND DUTIES; PROVIDING FOR OTHER MATTERS PROPERLY RELATED THERETO; AND REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES AND PARTS OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH was read in full to the Board. Commissioner Sharp moved the above entitled Ordinance No. 584 be adopted. Motion seconded by Commissioner Whipple and carried by the following vote: Commissioners Jarrett, Sharp, Whipple and His Honor voting aye; noes, Commissioner Bunker. At this time Commissioners Jarrett and Whipple members of the committee for recommendation on the proposed ordinance for Plumbing Code Amendment asked for additional time before reporting. The request of the Mesquite Club to name the City Park after Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Squires was considered by the Board at this time. Commissioner Bunker moved the adoption of a resolution naming the City Park after Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Squires; the Park to be known as Squires Park and a copy of the resolution to be sent to the Mesquite Club and to Mr. and Mrs. Squires. WHEREAS, it has been called to the attention of the Board of Commis­sioners that the Las Vegas City Park should be named in honor of some local citizens; and WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners acknowledges that it has long been the custom of cities and towns to name parks and other important land marks after the names of citizens who have served long and honorably for the benefit of the community; and WHEREAS, it is common knowledge in the City of Las Vegas that Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Squires have for many years resided in the City of Las Vegas and have been ardent boosters and given unstintingly of their time to the betterment and advancement of the community since its founding; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Board of Commissioners to honor such long and faithful service; and WHEREAS, a petition has been presented by the Mesquite Club and some of its members thereof requesting that such recognition be given; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Las Vegas, Nevada, at a regular meeting held on the 20th of January, 1954 that the name of the City Park located between Second and Fifth Street and Mesquite Avenue and Bonanza Road be and it shall here­after be known as "SQUIRES PARK", and shall be so posted and marked on all of the maps of the City and shall be known by that name hereafter. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be spread on the Minutes of the Meeting of the Board of Commissioners and that a copy of said Resolution be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Squires and the Mesquite Club. Motion seconded by Commissioner Whipple and carried by the following vote; Commissioners Bunker, Jarrett, Sharp, Whipple and His Honor voting aye; noes, none. 1-20-54
