Remem?ber, consecrants and their families are invited to dinner at 6:00 pm prior to services.Support Our Food Drive e High Holidays are traditionally a time of appeal. As a Temple we ask that you support our Kol Nidre appeal; that you give to a campaign that con?tributes nearly 25% of our Temple?s operating budget. As a Rabbi, I will also be appealing to your sense of Jewish?ness, asking you to reflect inward about what it means to be Jewish. I will ap?peal to your conscience, your deepest emotions, and your sense of Jewish responsibility. But this year, we will be continu?ing yet another appeal that has often been overlooked by our Congregation. It is an appeal for food, to help the needy in our community. Reform Con?gregations throughout the United States are joining together in an effort to collect 1,000,000 pounds of food High Holiday Services Schedule ROSH HASHANAH Evening Service Morning Service Youth Service (7-11)* Toddlers? Some find it difficult to fast even for a single day. Imagine those who?s fast is not religious but a fact of life; whose fast is daily and not just a solitary day. The Social Action Center of the Reform movement is asking that all congregations make a simple request that we give at least the amount of food that we would eat on that single day to this food drive. No, we are not asking for money, but rather that you go into your cupboards and find can goods and other items that would be useful to others. see Food Drive continued on page 6 & Youth Services $ High Holiday Youth Service for grades 1 thru 5 will begin at 10:00 am in the preschool, room 5. The service will be conducted by myself and Billy Tiep and will last one hour. We have decided to continue the morning?s program with a hands on experience which will last un?til the adult morning service has been completed. This will allow the children to remain in the youth service until you pick them up. Sixth grade and up will attend the adult services. We?ll have lots of fun by doing three different activities for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We are go?ing to have arts and crafts, discussions, and make a group project for Sukkot. The children will be divided up accord?ing to their grade level. At the end of services, please come to room 5 to pick up your children. They will not be released on their own. We really appreciate your coopei ation to make this a wonderful an organized holiday. ? L?shanah Toval Melissa Glovinsky d C ongregation N er T amid d message Several weeks ago when I began to con?sider this month?s message, I thought writing it would be an easy task. It is New Year?s. The past year has been good for the Congregation and the coming year should be the best in our history in anticipation of a record membership, the completion of our Sanctuary Campaign and commence- In just a few days Congregation Ner Tamid along with Jews all over the world will be celebrating the New Year, 5755. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the upcoming year. We at the Temple are also looking for?ward to the New Year. A lot is going to happen... a new sanctuary, new and more exciting school programs and new adult programs are forthcoming. How?ever, none of this is possible without the support of our Congregants. We belong to a Temple for many reasons. All of us, regardless of our rea?sons, expect to be satisfied when the need arises. And yet Temple fees seem to be at the bottom of the family ex?pense totem. The Temple cannot serve the needs of its Congregants without the funds to do so. These funds come from you. Remember, you may not have need of the services the Temple provides now, but when you do, you will expect them to be provided. So as you spend the next few days reflecting on the past and the future, keep in mind that the future of your Temple, Congregation Ner Tamid, rests with each of you. ? L?Shana Tova! Burt Rosenberg ment of construction and the continued enhancement of our programs and activities. Several years ago the Board of Trustees established a policy that per?sons or families applying for member?ship must be accepted into membership by the Board. While 1 cannot recall an application which has not been accept?ed, this policy symbolizes an underly?ing principle of the relationship which exists between the Congregation and its members; while the Congregation has the responsibility to provide a program of Jewish activities for its members, the members are obligated to support these activities both financially and through participation. Membership is a benefit and not a right. Initiated four years ago by the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, D.C., the program brings the Jewish commu?nity together during our most sacred holidays to fight against hunger. Last year our temple succeeded in collect?ing over 600 pounds of food. This was donated to the Jewish Family Service and the Weekend Emergency Assis?tance Program. This year we hope the response will be even stronger and that each one of you will participate in this most im?portant effort. On Erev Rosh Hashanah empty bags will be distributed to the congregants. We are asking that people return the bags, filled with nonperish?able foods and toiletries by September 25th. No clothes at this time please. A new Social Action Project will be the distribution of holiday gift packag?es to ten Jewish residents of a local convalescent home. Each bag will con?tain a miniature challa, grape juice, fresh fruit and a New Year?s card. This is being done with the cooperation of Bill Feldman, Executive Director of the Jewish Family Services. Also, on the Social Action calendar are a session with speakers on ?Ethics and Issues,? to be held between morn?ing and afternoon Yom Kippur servic?es, a political forum to take place in late October and our Annual Temple Blood Drive held at the same time as the Channukah Bazaar. If you have a child between the ages of 18 and 22 who is away from home, please supply his/her name in writing to the Temple so that we can mail them a Channukah gift package.
