Biographical / Historical Note

The Division of Educational Outreach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) was established in 1966 when UNLV offered its first non-credit courses administered as an extension of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). In 1971, two years after breaking from UNR, UNLV included a section in the course catalog dedicated to continuing education. The mission of the Office of Continuing Education in UNLV's Division of Educational Outreach is committed to creating an environment that promotes quality instruction, professional development, and community engagement. As of 2024, the Division of Educational Outreach oversees the following programs: the Cannon Survey Center, Community2Campus, Continuing Education, OLLI, the Public Lands Institute, and summer terms.

The Extended Education Center for Lifelong Learning (EXCELL) started in 1991 by Paul Aizely, former dean of Continuing Education. Aizley started EXCELL by request of Stephanie Smith who had moved to Las Vegas, Nevada from Boston, Massachusetts in 1990 and was seeking member-driven continuing education programs specifically for retired individuals. The first class of EXCELL continuing education students included Smith, Shirley Harris, Edythe Katz, Carol Steedman, and Gil Yarchever. In 2006, the lifelong learning program changed names and became the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). As of 2024, OLLI continues to provide classes, special events, and shared interest groups for members at UNLV's campus as well as throughout the Las Vegas valley and online.
