Message Aug 2006 Av-Elul 5706 was formed this year and is working to develop an expansion of classes and workshops which will be available in the coming year. The Ronald and Judy Mack School of Religious Studies under the direction of the new Education Director and the newly formed Religious School Committee worked to enhance the level of Jewish education for our largest group of 235 students. During the year, the Religious School introduced a new Tefillah (prayer) curriculum, revamped the music program and reconstituted the Midrasha High School program. All of these changes helped to give our children a strong foundation and love for learning about Judaism. Parents who want the very best in Jewish Day School education choose the Temple's Solomon Schechter Day School. This was an exciting second year for this school. The school grew from last year's class of six students to two classes with 14 children. With a growing reputation, early registration for the 2006-2007 school year has been very positive. We have had to add a 2nd kindergarten class and the school is expected to exceed 50 students. The Sandra and Stanley Mallin Early Childhood Center, already a successfully recognized program, made even further strides this past year. With support of a revitalized Early Childhood Committee and a marketing professional, marketing strategy and new brochure was developed to enhance the school's visibility in the community. A successful Petit Couture Fashion Show raised funds to help support the school and a Hanukkah Scholarship Appeal ensured that every child who wanted to attend school could afford to do so. An active PTO supported the many activities of the school and helped to create a more child-friendly environment in the Scully Library for our children. A variety of mitzvah activities raised funds to support a local soup kitchen, Katrina victims and a Thanksgiving meal project. Most importantly, the school enhanced their curriculum, providing children in this program with the most developmentally appropriate Jewish early childhood education available. All of the programs and activities of Temple Beth Sholom could not take place without a certain amount of fundraising. This year saw the introduction of a very successful Expressions Israeli Art Exhibit and Sale. Not only did this event raise significant funds for Temple operations, it also enhanced hundreds of homes with beautiful art pieces and supported Israeli artists. The Temple's most successful fundraiser was this year's Man Of The Year Gala. This festive event at the Stardust raised record funds and was a fitting tribute to our newest Temple Beth Sholom Board member, Ellis Landau. As the Temple's programs, activities and membership grow, so does the need for facility space. Thanks to the generosity of many synagogue leaders, the Capital Campaign for the Abbie and David Friedman Multi-Generational Pavilion has closed in on $5 million. When completed, this expansion will provided needed classrooms, meeting rooms and a large multi-use space for children and adults. Providing food service to the schools, onegs, kiddushes, meetings and celebrations was enhanced this year with the hiring of Cary Wisner, the Temple's Chef. The addition of Cary has made it easier for congregants to celebrate a Simcha in style, by working with an In-House Chef/Caterer. The Board of Directors worked tirelessly during the year to ensure growth and strength of the Temple. A financial audit was undertaken for the first time in the Temple's 60 year history, with the goal of reviewing the Temple's financial accounts and procedures. We are pleased to report that the Temple is in a strong financial position. The position of President of Temple Beth Sholom is an awesome responsibility. Thank you again to all of the great professionals and volunteers who have worked tirelessly during the past year to help make this great Temple a second home for all of us. Women's League News By Kim Memar I cannot possibly put into words how very honored and excited I am about being President for the Women's League of Temple Beth Sholom. I would like to thank the outgoing board for their dedication and commitment to Women's League. They have worked hard and persevered through many challenges. I know that my role as Women's League president will bring many exciting challenges to me, the WL Board, and the Temple as well. I feel privileged to be able to work with the women who are on my board. They are a dynamic, devoted, and intelligent group of women who are committed to Jewish values and ideals. Each one has a talent, a special spark that once revealed, and put together with all the other sparks can ignite a flame whose warmth spreads throughout our community. I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity to work together with such an absolutely incredible group of women. We are a part of one of the largest synagogue-based women's organizations in the world. Together we can help to make a difference in our Temple, learn more about our Jewish heritage, as well as make a difference in our community and in ourselves. 1 invite you to join us on our journey this next year and to be a part of our Temple and our Jewish Community; helping to support the mission of WLCJ. To strengthen and unite synagogue women's groups and their members; to support them in mutual efforts to understand and perpetuate Conservative/Masorti Judaism in the home, synagogue, and community; and to reinforce their bonds with Israel and Jews worldwide. I invite you to become a part of your Temple family. To support your Women's League as we in turn support the many life cycles and events that are ongoing at our Temple. It is a place where you can still get that "warm fuzzy" atmosphere that comes from the heart of caring individuals like yourselves. Together we can strive to repair the world. I look forward to sharing my passion and enthusiasm for the Women's League, our Temple, and Judaism with the new board and invite each and every woman who wants to have an active role in this Temple Family to join us. I look forward to an adventurous and amazing journey together. Our first general meeting will be on Wednesday, August 16"' at 11:30 at TBS. See you there! Andrew Bursten Joins Temple Team You may not be surprised to see Andy Bursten around the Temple; however, you may be surprised to see him in his new role. Andy is the viola player in the Ruach Ensemble, which plays during our special Shabbat HaNashama services. In his other life, Andy is a controller. We are fortunate to have Andy join the staff of Temple Beth Sholom as our new Controller. Andy holds an MBA from the American University in Washington, DC and has been involved in non-profit accounting for close to 25 years. He is a regular minyan and Shabbat service participant and when not playing for the Ruach Ensemble, plays viola in the Henderson Civic Symphony. We encourage all congregants to stop by and welcome Andy to his new position.
