Bet Knesset Bamidbar Volume IX Issue 11 " m m DD2D r p i Cheshvan - Kislev 5761 November 2000 NEWSLETTER FROM RABBI'S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS As we begin the New Year of 5761, we are saddened by the tragic fighting going on in Israel. To better understand the frustration that the leaders of Israel must be feeling, I want to share this compelling article which was written on October 6, 2000 by Thomas L. Friedman of the New York Times. Memo from: President Bill Clinton To: Yasir Arafat It's been a tragic week in your neighborhood, and I'm sure you're wondering what I'm thinking, so let me tell you. Yasir, as I was watching the TV news of all the fighting between Palestinians and Israelis the thought occurred to me: "Wow, this looks just like the intifada back in the 1980's." But then I realized that there's one big difference between then and now: Yitzhak Shamir is no longer Prime Minister of Israel, offering Palestinians a high-school student-council form of autonomous self-rule. No, no, no. The Prime Minister today is Ehud Barak, and he's offered you a deal that even I never imagined six months ago. He has put on the table a proposal for turning 92 percent of the West Bank into a Palestinian state. He has offered a legitimate proposal for dealing with the Palestinian refugees, with both compensation and some right of return. He has offered, and this really blew me away, Palestinian sovereignty over the Muslim and Christian quarters of the Old City of Jerusalem, and even some form of U.N. administration over what the Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims call the Haram esh-Sharif. Yasir, that's what's on the table! Is it perfect from your point of view? No. But is it a serious Israeli opening bid that a serious Palestinian counteroffer could improve? Absolutely. And what's been your response? First, you went on a worldwide magical mystery tour to avoid having to make a serious counteroffer, and you found out that the world thinks you should get busy and do a deal with Prime Minister Barak. And now your people are rioting against a provocative visit by Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount. My God, man, can't you keep your eye on the prize? You have an opportunity to deliver a Palestinian state, and to end the misery of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, and you're out there throwing stones and demanding an international investigation into the latest shootout. Are you nuts? Of course Sharon provoked you. That's because he's always depended upon mutual fear and hatred to propel his career. Do I need to remind you that an Israeli commission of inquiry found him indirectly responsible for the massacre of innocent Palestinian men, women and children in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in 1982? That's who he is, but he's not the Prime Minister of Israel! And when you block him from visiting the Temple Mount, even as a provocation, you send a message to Israelis that if that area is under your control you will decide which "good" Israelis can visit and which "bad" Israelis can't. Nothing could be more damaging to your cause. Sharon thrives politically when you all behave like a mob. But Sharon shrinks when you're engaged in building a real peace with a moderate like Barak, and living up to your security responsibilities, which you had been doing. So, Yasir, we know who Sharon is. We also know who Barak is. The question I have is: Who are you? Are you Sharon's partner or Barak's partner? Both men need you to succeed politically. If you're Sharon's partner, well, you're finished. The last time you tangled with him in Beirut, you ended up in Tunis. This time, God knows what sort of exile you'll end up in. Because if Israelis feel that this whole Oslo deal was just a ruse and that it only produced better-armed Palestinians closer to them, they will crush you even at a huge cost to themselves. If you're Barak's partner you can end up in Jerusalem, but only if you make a serious counteroffer of your own. I know, you keep looking to the Arab leaders to give you political cover for the tough compromises, especially on Jerusalem. But I told you at Camp David: The only thing the Arab leaders are good for is applauding you when you do something really stupid. Are you just like them? Are you just another Hafez al-Assad or Haj Amin el-Husseini, who sold their people fantasies about defeating the Jews and delivered nothing? Or are you an Anwar el-Sadat, who understood how to make peace with dignity? I thought I knew, but I don't know anymore. Because you keep saying yes to the future without ever closing the door on the past. Time to choose Yasir. If you make up your mind, give me a call at the White House: 202-456-1414. But it better be soon because once I'm gone you'll just get a busy signal and it better be with an answer: Who are you? PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER "Some have forgotten that Judaism calls us to love and to serve others." "Self-seeking leaves little room for self-sacrifice, and our high-sounding words are rarely translated into action." These 2 lines are taken from one of the prayers that we recited on Yom Kippur afternoon. For some of us they are not heeded but for many of us they are. Many of our congregation translates these words into actions and I would like to congratulate them and acknowledge their contributions to a very successful set of High Holiday services. Starting with our Rabbi and the excellent service he runs along with his wonderful, in-depth sermons. Rabbi Brooks - thank you for your continuing support to Bet Knesset Bamidbar. Our Cantorial soloists were "right on" throughout the four days and we thank Abe Ginsberg and Alex Kuechel for their time and effort preparing for the services and for the high quality of chanting that they both did. Well done, gentlemen. You received many high compliments in the days following the Services. Our choir - what can we say about the choir? They were terrific from Erev Rosh Hashanah through the end of Neilah. We thank you for that and the countless hours you spent practicing. Ladies and Gentlemen, we thank you all. Lynn Feliciano, our excellent and demanding choir mistress, leads a group consisting of: Ana Block, Penny Bromberg, Lou Brown, Marty Brown, June Edelman, Lucille Goldstein, Gilda Haus, Mort Haynes, Hans Kaichen, Ed Kaplow, Lou Klionsky, Fran Levin, Josh Lipow, Salya Lipow, Joanie Mandel, Sydell Miller, Dave Perlmutter, Sandy Ribstein, Pat Rosen, Malcolm Schiffman, Abe Sparber and Jerry Weissman. Three other members of the choir who did not participate in High Holiday Services should also be mentioned - Arlene Goodman, Shirley Barondess and Elaine Sipelstein. Two major efforts are made during the pre-holiday period. Sarah Greene handled a myriad of problems getting tickets to everyone. As you know , we could not satisfy everyone and for that we are truly sorry. We will make every effort to improve that situation for next year. Thank you Sarah for your yeoman-type effort. Jean Modes and Elaine Sipelstein produced the Book of Remembrance and their efforts should not go unnoticed. Much appreciated!!! Behind the scenes and set-up for the services is a major effort. Transforming the Desert Vista Ballroom into Temple Bet Knesset Bamidbar was done predominantly by Janos Strauss and Irwin Haus. Helping Irwin and Janos were Roily Weinstein and Lou Klionsky. Gentlemen - you made major contributions to the success we all enjoyed and we thank you. Adorning the Bimah were flowers donated by Vicki Waks (Rosh Hashanah) and Lynne Willens and Faye Arshawsky (Yom Kippur). Thank you!! Helping maintain the decorum and pitching in wherever they were needed were those who volunteered to be ushers. Lou Pokat, our Men's Club President, headed the usher team that consisted of the following group of members - some of which volunteered for more than one shift. We thank you all. They were: Harry Bank, Evie Dorfman, Simon Epstein, Charlie Forman, Bob Greene, Herb Halpert, Joe Harf, Sam Hudis, Ray Izen, Ruth Kaplow, Harold Pressner, Don Singer, Ed Turken, Roily Weinstein and Ruth Young. Since I am thanking everyone for their efforts on behalf of the Temple, I would like to thank the Officers and Board of Directors who have supported me in taking on this special effort. You can meet them personally at the Annual Meeting on Nov. 6, at Desert Vista at 7:00 PM. The Officers are Rhoda Schwartz, Lou Klionsky, Sarah Greene, Jean Modes, and Steve Tolman. The Board is made up of Arlene Goodman, Ted Friedman, Irwin Haus, Sydell Miller, Max Ross, Norm Segal, Rosanna Smith, Abe Sparber, Hershel Weinrott, Gloria Wishengrad, Janice Baron, Lou Pokat and Faye Arshawsky. It is to all those mentioned that I congratulate you on understanding that "Judaism calls us to love and serve others" and you have "translated this into action." To all of you who participated in the Services I thank you also. I thank you for being in the right place at the right time to make the Services run smoothly. Please forgive me if I inadvertently omitted someone. It was not intentional and I apologize. May we all be able to celebrate next year together!!! SISTERHOOD NEWS JANICE BARON, President As most of you must know by now, our Sisterhood luncheon was a tremendous success. Sandy Ribstein did layout and designing of our lovely programs. She was ably assisted by Mimi Singer and Ruth Weinrott. Pearl Bressinger's "hat" centerpieces for each table were just perfect. Their creations had to be unbelievably time consuming, but well worth it. Bob Anderson (thanks to Selma Soriano) was his usual wonderful self. I think he had as good a time as we did. The Macy's Fashion Show was wonderful. There were too many tireless volunteers to mention everyone, but each Oops: We goofed. Wish all our friends at Bet Knesset Bamidbar a very Happy New Year. BOOK DEDICATIONS From Robert & Sandra Mayer In Honor of 50, h Wedding Anniversary WALLY & PHYLLIS HOLLANDER From Paul & Jean Ceh In Honor of 50l h Wedding Anniversary WALLY & PHYLLIS HOLLANDER 2 Books From Tony & Myma Stefanelli In Honor of SO"1 Wedding Anniversary WALLY & PHYLLIS HOLLANDER ABOUT RITUAL LOUIS KLIONSKY, VP Ritual Spiritual Accounting System If you ask someone: Are you eating to live, or living to eat? Of course they'll tell you they are eating to live. Now ask them: What are you living for? They won't always have a good answer, but at least you made them think about what they are doing in life. Unfortunately the majority of humanity is very busy doing and accomplishing, but they don't know for what. Everyone has instances in life where something wakes them up and they are confronted by the question: What has my life been all about up till now? Momentarily they may be scared, but all too often, rather then trying to answer the question, the person escapes by turning on the TV or grabbing a newspaper. We are very fortunate because through the Torah, God has told us what we are here for. Ultimately what we want in life is to love God. What we have to do is get in touch with this desire of our souls and then plan how to attain that love. We say this in the Shema twice daily (and it's written in the mezuzah) "To know that God is One, and to love Him with everything we have." Use your mind to clarify if this is what you really want. If it is! Then ask, "What am I doing to attain it?" This is the process a Jew goes through on Rosh Hashana: "What am I living for?" and "What am I doing to attain it?" If we do this we are guaranteed greatness. The biggest fence against wasting your life is Cheshbon Hanefesh?Spiritual Accounting. You need a regular system to evaluate how well you performed and take stock of where you stand. Every night before going to bed, look back at that day's events, and evaluate where you profited or lost. Then make a plan so the next day will be more productive. Read over your list of mistakes and remind yourself, "This is the enemy". It might be laziness, envy, or bad temper. Track down your own Achilles heel, and concentrate on that. If you review your list daily and get angry at your own stupidities, then that anger will give you the power to make changes. On Rosh Hashana, we make a chesbon covering the previous year. Figure out what you did right and what you did wrong and then make a plan to correct those mistakes. We have to take responsibility for our lives because no one else will do it for us. We are all created in God's image and have the potential for greatness. The most important thing is to ask ourselves and clarify "What am I living for?" The Shofar blasts like an alarm clock. We can either wake up and ask the right questions, or sleep our lives way. The Almighty wants us to wake up and live. Large Print Siddurim We are proud to announce that the Temple has purchased 12 large print Shabbat prayer books. Those of you who would like to use these during the Services s h o u l d ask an usher as you enter the Sanctuary. After the services please return the book to the usher as we want to keep these books separate f r om the others. If y o u have any questions, please call Shel Kolner at 838-7413.
