JFLV Beverly Eisen Renee Diamond Myrna Williams Lenard Schwartzer Arlene Peikoff Blut Rabbi Mel Hecht Brian Berman Barry Lieberman Ms. Stern Marvin Sedway, Assemblyman Jan Biggerstaff, CCSD Trustee Mark Schofield, CCSD Trustee Elise Ax The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Chairman, Michael A. Cherry. Mike then announced that this meeting was being recorded. He then asked everyone present to introduce themselves and state their affiliations. Discussion of recruitment of Jewish teachers in 1988 was the first issue addressed. Sari Aizley said that we must take afirmative action and have the full support of the ACLU; she then read a statement from them in re?gard to the issue. Attorney Mark Goldstein introduced attorney Barry Lieberman, who spoke about possible litigation; possible Class Action Suit, He himself is a federal litagator. Mark requested a legal support committee. Arne Rosen?crantz informed him that this committee can only make reccomendations to the Executive Committee for their determination. At this time, we are simply discussing the current situations and our past negotiations with the Clark County School District. No action can be taken at this time, nor is it reccomended. Mike went on to discuss the news article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which appeared today. Copies were available for those present. Hal Ober has been meeting with CCSD administration since June of 1987, when he began negotiations for policy changes in hiring and promotion practices. 1030 East Twain Avenue Las Vegas, Nevada 89109 (702) 732-0556COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE MEETING OF: 3/9/88 Page 2 We were joined at this point by 2 Clark County School District Trustees: Jan Biggerstaff and Mark Schofield. They had called earlier in the day to ask if they could attend and we welcomed their concerns. They asked to hear the complaints of this committee and discussed our concerns. At this point they offered to assist and suggested that we attend the regularly scheduled School District Meeting the next evening. Most people in attendance agreed to do so. Mike stated that our 3 major areas of concern are: 1. Recruitment & Hiring 2. Promotion 3. Insensitivity to Jewish High Holy Days and Shabbat graduation scheduling Mike then said we must have "Cultural Diversity." He thanked everyone for attending and showing concern for our quality of education and rights of all educators in Clark County. The meeting stood adjourned at 9:45 P.M.
