Bet Knesset Bamidbar Volume IX Issue 6 Iyar - Sivan 5760 NEWSLETTER June 2000 The Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class of Bet Knesset Bamidbar of Sun City corciiaiiy invites you io our B'nai Mitzvah Service and Celebration June 10, 2000 at 9:00 a.m. in Desert Vista Faye Arshawsky Jack Bass Jane Fishman Eunice Forman Tina Goldstein Sarah Greene Paul Greenfield Sandra Levine Edith Lossos Beverly Miller Lawrence Rosen Patricia Rosen Rhoda Schwartz Irene Silver Mimi Singer Renee Singer Hank Stein Rita Stein Rita Stromberg Ruth Weinrott Betty Weltman Lynne Willens Gloria Wishengrad FROM RABBI'S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS Eli Wiesel points out that the Book of Ruth, customarily read on Shavuot, is different from all other books in the Bible. It describes events that are related not to national politics, but to individual adventure. There are no divine revelations on mountaintops, no miracles, no divine inter-ventions and God plays a relatively minor role in this narrative. The choices made were personal, not prophetic. Said the Talmudic Rabbi, Zeira, "This book contains no law related to purity or impurity, to the forbidden and the permitted, the sacred and the profane; it was written solely to teach us the reward of generosity." So, why is it read on the holiday of giving the Torah? It is to teach us that our individual actions can have far reaching communal consequences. Naomi and Ruth were ordinary people. They traveled, like many of us, in search of employment. They experienced personal moments of joy and excruciating pain. Their lives were simple. Yet they were heroic. In the ancient world, the most vulnerable person was the widow, the orphan and the stranger. Naomi displayed courage in her unwillingness to lay down and die when she lost her husband and her sons. Naomi was both the widow and the stranger. Yet she persevered. Ruth on the other hand, demonstrated both compassion for her mother-in-law and dedication to Jewish values that took precedence over personal comfort. It would, after all, have been much easier for her to return to familiar surroundings with her sister, Orpa. This is also a story of profound love, both between Ruth and Naomi, and Ruth and Boaz. I am overwhelmed by the fact, that neither Naomi, Boaz nor Ruth realized the tremendous consequences of their actions for the Jewish people. Had they handled the situation differently, Jewish history and our messianic vision would have been pro-foundly altered or possibly denied. This Biblical narrative teaches us that one life can make a difference. This is the glory of our Jewish heritage. While it asks us to climb the mountains of life and to grapple with ultimate issues, it also gently reminds us not to forget the seemingly small good deeds we perform. They too can bear positive fruit. SINGLES' NEWS FAYE ARSHAWSKY, President A good time was had by everyone who attended our "Mother's Day" Italian catered lunch. President: Faye Arshawsky 838-5181 V.P Membership: llene Markus 240-0580-82 Transportation: Jacque Pachtman 233-4390 Sunshine: Shellie Greenberg 228-7487 2 PRESIDENT SHEL KOLNER Boy - it seems like the frequency of these articles is accelerating. Time does go faster as you get older. I feel like I just wrote an article and here I am again. I recently have seen two different sayings that stuck with me. They seem to want to be shared so I thought I would. The first one was either heard on television or read in a book - 1 honestly don't remember the source. It was "dress British, think Yiddish." It stuck with me because the world can probably be a better place if both of these were done. Dressing British is really no big deal for the world. Whatever dress is used will suffice as most of us look better dressed than without clothes. Aah... But the thinking Yiddish ? think like a Jew. Now there is a lesson to be learned for many. Using the Jewish thought process in the world would certainly make it a better place. But not only the process ? but the capabilities of all the great Jews and their contributions. Thinking Yiddish is really a great idea!!!! The second saying that I recently heard was well in line with Think Yiddish. It was "when you learn, teach; when you get, give." Also a way of life for the Jewish peopie. Many of us have learned a lot over the years. It is time to give back what we have learned by willingly teaching others. Reach out and help others by using our experiences. When you get, give - also a Jewish thought process. Many of us do that now in many ways. We give in form of tributes, food for the Jewish Family Services pantry and we give of ourselves. We have been fortunate to be where we are today. We should continue to give of ourselves to our Temple and to other worthy organizations and needy areas. Speaking of those who give of themselves, I would like to acknowledge some of the members of the Temple who give of themselves in order to be sure our Shabbat services are done well. The officers and board of directors are working month in and month out for the direct benefit of the total membership of the Temple. Please see the mailing page of the Newsletter for the complete list The fortnightly Shabbat services would not be the same without the Rabbi and the choir. In order to acknowledge their contributions, I am going to introduce the choir and the Cantorial Soloists at the June 9th service. They put in a large amount of time preparing for services under the direction of Lynn Burdick, our choir mistress. Also, in order for the services to come off so beautifully, we have Irwin Haus and Janos Strauss setting up the bimah area with help from Steve Tolman and Jay Levinson. Ushering at the entrance and exit are Manfred Berger and Ray Izen. The Oneg Shabbat done by the sponsors under the direction of Judy Martin, Janice Baron, Betty Pardo and Sheila Harris contributes to a nice social gathering after the service. Food for the Jewish Family Services are gathered up and delivered by Morrie Berman, Ed Kaufman and Bill Grossman. Also greeting members and guests at the main entrance are Sarah Greene, Membership Vice- President, Rhea Sturza, Sisterhood Oneg Shabbat scheduler and Ruth Golden, Tributes Chairiady. One other thank you' should not be omitted. Addie Klionsky and Ariene Goodman, along with Rabbi and Alma Brooks, did an outstanding job on this year's Seder. It was so nice that the only complaint I had was that there was too much food. I thank you all very much for all the contributions you make and if I have omitted someone, I apologize. Please let me know so I can include you in future articles. Now these acknowledgements were directed at the Shabbat and Seder services. I will acknowledge the many more people who contribute in other areas next month. Shalom!! Because the Temple was a great privilege for the Jewish people, it came along with great responsibilities as well. These responsibilities meant that Jews were to serve G-d with more devotion than ever before and to be a guiding light for all of the nations of the world. When unfortunately the Jewish people didn't live up to these responsibilities, as a consequence they lost the Temple. Today Jews do not go onto the Temple Mount, because it is forbidden to go into certain spots that are reserved for the Kohanim (priests). The re-building will begin when the Messiah comes. This Third Temple will be on the Temple Mount, exactly where it previously stood. In fact, Maimonides writes that one sign that the Messiah is the real Messiah will be when he re-builds at any moment. The Midrash says that the Third Temple has already been constructed in heaven, and merely awaits our preparations here on earth. Furthermore, in every generation an individual exists with the capacity to step into the role of the Messiah. We must feel the pain of exile if we have any hope of reversing it. Like orphans who never knew their parents, we risk going about our daily lives insensitive to the lack of a healthy spiritual world. If we hope to have the Temple rebuilt, we must strive to understand what the loss of the Temple means and how we can connect with our destiny, our struggle, our mission and our identity as a people. The Jewish people are clearly heading towards redemption. One apparent sign is that the Jewish people have returned to the Land of Israel and made it bloom once again. A major movement is afoot of young Jews returning to Torah tradition. G-d is ready when we are. For as King David writes in Psalms 95, "Redemption will come today if you hearken to his voice".
