Bet Knesset Bamidbar - m m n t o D n > a NEWSLETTER Volume IX Issue 4 Adar II - Nisan 5760 April 2000 Passover - April 20-27 - n O ??) FROM RABBI S DESK HERSHEL BROOKS One of the interesting aspects of the observance of Pesach is the fact that it is not only a joyous celebration but also a reminder of the suffering, the sacrifice and the hardship which were a prelude to and part of the great victory. We rejoice over freedom from Egyptian bondage but before us is Matzoh, the bread of affliction, which our ancestors ate. We drink wine but we must also partake of Maror, the bitter herb reminding us of the bitter life of our people in Egypt, and, when Pesach comes to a close, we include Yiskor in our services. Some may wonder why we should mar a festival of joy with sadness, why we should bring to mind that which depresses us. This is in keeping with the tendency of human beings to blot out that which is unpleasant. But the Jew was a realist and in the midst of his greatest joy he carried within him not only the sad memory of what victory had cost but also a realization of what might possibly occur in the future. Memories fade, to be sure, but what is more important is that we want to forget. The individual who has achieved success hates to think of his early struggles. The person who has recovered after a serious illness does not want to bring to mind the anxious days when his life hung in the balance. Jews dont want to be reminded constantly of the Holocaust and the innocent six million who were killed by the fury of the Nazis. The Torah states not only that we were slaves in Egypt but it commands us to remember that fact always. This is not only for the purpose of teaching the past but also to admonish us of the fleeting character of happiness, the momentary thrill of achievement and the potentiality of evil which resides in human beings. Memories serve to temper the exuberance of the spirit, to curb excess and to encourage sobriety. The law of Pesach makes it mandatory for every Jew to taste the bitterness of the Maror. It reminds us of our difficult role in the world. It bids us remember that life consists of more than drinking wine and eating kneidlach. Alma and I wish you a joyous Pesachl 4 About our Newsletter: Bet Knesset Bamidbar of Sun City Newsletter is a monthly publication. BKB address is P.O. Box 33503, Las Vegas, NV 89133. Tuesday's with Shel is once a month - the 3rd Tuesday of the month. It is Bet Knesset's Board Meeting where direction of the Temple is set by the 20 dedicated officers and board members. I start this monthly article with "Tuesday's with Shel" as it brings to mind some of the lessons learned in Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. There are many great lessons taught to Mitch by Morrie Schwartz in his weekly visits. Morrie was a professor at Brandeis University who was dying of ALS and Mitch was one of his students. Now I dont profess to be scholarly but there are lessons in this book that would benefit all of us. On one page Morrie asks Mitch the following four questions (appropriate number for this time of year): "Have you found someone to share your life with?" "Are you giving to your community?" "Are you at peace with yourself?" "Are you trying to be as human as you can be?" The second and fourth questions struck home with me. It is what I have tried to delineate in prior articles and at the Board of Directors meeting. We, who are fortunate to arrive at this time in our lives and have the time and resources to give back to the community, should be striving to do just that. We are doing this one step at a time. We are expanding our Temple Out-reach program, administered by the Sisterhood, to the Seville Terrace. Starting in March Lynne Willens and Faye Arshawsky are doing a Shabbat Evening service on the 2nd Friday of the month and Lou and Phyllis Pokat are doing the same the 4^ Friday night of the month. This is in addition to Ruth and Mort Gottesman doing their service at Grand Court, Irene Silver and Betty Pardo donating their time at Sun Lake Terrace and Trudy and I doing our service at The Plaza. There are other opportunities to reach out to other areas to do community service. If you have the time there are agencies that need the resources. So reach out and help someone. It is very worth your while!!! There are opportunities within Bet Knesset also. So if you are interested please let the Presidents of the Temple, Singles, Sisterhood or Men's Club know your desires. The 4th question - trying to be human as you can be. This is open to many interpretations - one of which should be the treatment of others. When someone is in trouble we are always ready to reach out to them, treat them with dignity and offer to do what is necessary to help them through their difficulties. Why not do these all the time. Treat people with the dignity and respect that they deserve and you would like if you were in their position or situation. Now enough of my philosophical discussion. I want to fill you in on one action the Board of Directors took in February. A motion was made and passed unanimously to not allow any video, audio, cameras or tape recording devices to be used during Friday Night or High Holiday Services. This goes into effect immediately. Shalom!! MEN'S CLUB NEWS LOU POKAT, President Our next meeting will be at the MountainView Hospital on Sunday, April 2, 2000. Our breakfast, as usual, will start at 9:00 a.m. and our meeting will commence at 9:30 a.m. The guest speaker will be Virginia Valentine who is the Las Vegas City Manager. Her address will be about the workings of local government and her office. This should be another very interesting discussion. I am sure you all have questions about the workings of Las Vegas and she is the one who can answer them. We are beginning to work on our barbecue that will be held in June. There will be no Men's Club meeting in the month of June. All information regarding this function should be available by the April 2nd meeting. REMEMBER THE DATE NOVEMBER 4, 2000. MARK IT ON YOUR CALENDAR. BIG DOINGS. See you at the April 2nd meeting. SISTERHOOD NEWS JANICE BARON, President The April 26, 2000 meeting of the Sisterhood will be at the Rainbow Library at 9:30 a.m. Betty Pardo, Vice-President of the League of Women Voters of the Las Vegas Valley will present the League's Vote Smarter program that debunks campaign oratory. What do Reform Jews Do? If anyone were to attempt to answer these two questions authoritatively for all Reform Jews, that person's answers would be false. Why? Because one of the guiding principles of Reform Judaism is the autonomy of the individual. A Reform Jew has the right to decide whether to subscribe to this particular belief or that particular practice. But there is a historic body of beliefs and practices that is recognized as Jewish. We Jews have survived centuries of exile and persecution as well as centuries of unparalleled spiritual and intellectual creativity because we have always thought of ourselves as a people created "in the image of God" dedicated to ' tikkun olam', the improvement of the world. The particular beliefs and practices that have traditionally identified us as Jews have enabled us not only to survive creatively but also to connect with God, "Who has kept us alive, sustained us and enables us to reach this moment". We Reform Jews are heirs to a vast body of beliefs and practices embodied in Torah and the other Jewish sacred writings. We differ from more ritually observant Jews because we recognize that our sacred heritage has evolved and adapted over the centuries and that it must continue to do so. We also recognize that if Judaism were not capable of evolution, of reform, it could not survive. Reform Judaism accepts and encourages pluralism. Judaism has never demanded uniformity of belief or practice. We must never forget whether we are Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, or Orthodox, we are all an essential part of K'lal Yisrael, the worldwide community of Jewry. All Jews have an obligation to study the traditions that have been entrusted to us and to observe those mitzvot, those sacred and time hallowed acts, that have meaning for us today and that can ennoble our lives as well as those of our families and communities. It is our mitzvot that put us in touch with Abraham and Sarah, with Moses, Hillel and the Jews of fifth century Babylonia, twelfth century Spain, and eighteenth century Poland, the Jews of twentieth century Auschwitz, Israel, the former Soviet Union, and our neighboring town.
