Biographical / Historical Note

The COVID-19 pandemic decimated the Nevada economy, taxed limited state government infrastructure, and overwhelmed public health and safety services. Nevada endured a nation-leading peak unemployment rate of 28.2 percent in April 2020, and the Las Vegas, Henderson, Paradise, Nevada metropolitan statistical area (MSA), home to more than 75 percent of the state population, struggled with a 33.5 percent unemployment rate. In addition to

the public health crisis that took the lives of over 12,000 Nevadans, severe social and economic dislocations hindered the ability of businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations to address the many needs of families and individuals. Moreover, the unprecedented influx of nearly $19 billion in federal relief funding in Nevada required the real-time, coordinated response of state and local government agencies to respond to the crisis. To document the perspectives and experiences of Nevada leaders as they navigated the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic better understand the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and to enhance the ability of officials to respond and collaborate when faced with future crises, a team of researchers at The Lincy Institute conducted 81 interviews with Nevada leaders from 2021-2024.
